Aerial Service
An Aerial Service is the annual inspection for apparatus equipped with an aerial device — including ladder trucks, tower ladders, and aerial platforms. It covers 70 inspection points focused on the aerial structure, hydraulic systems, stabilizers, electrical systems, safety interlocks, and operational testing. This inspection must comply with NFPA 1911.
Aerial Service
This inspection must meet NFPA 1911 standards for aerial fire apparatus. Annual certification testing and documentation is mandatory. All load tests must be performed by qualified personnel.
Aerial Structure
- Visual inspection of the aerial device structure for cracks, corrosion, or damage
- All ladder sections — damage, wear, and deformation
- All rungs — secure mounting, wear, and anti-slip surface condition
- Aerial device base turntable and mounting bolts
- All safety decals and load charts — visibility and legibility
Rotation & Elevation
- Rotation mechanism operation and bearing condition
- Rotation limit switches and safety interlocks
- Extension cylinders — leaks, damage, and proper operation
- Elevation cylinders — leaks and smooth operation
Hydraulic System
- Hydraulic hoses and fittings — leaks, wear, and damage
- Hydraulic fluid level and condition
- Hydraulic pump operation and pressure
- Hydraulic oil reservoir and filter
- All hydraulic control valves — proper operation
Stabilizers & Outriggers
- Stabilizer/outrigger operation
- Stabilizer pads and mounting hardware
- Stabilizer interlocks and safety systems
Cables & Sheaves
- All cables and sheaves — wear and proper operation
- Cable tension and routing
Electrical & Warning Systems
- All aerial device lights (platform, tip, and ladder)
- Load moment indicator (LMI) system operation
- Anti-two-block system and warning devices
- Electrical system and wiring — damage
- Ground control station and emergency override
- All audible warning devices (backup alarm, rotation alarm)
Operational Tests
- Waterway and nozzle operation (if equipped)
- Operational test at full extension
- Verification that aerial device certification is current and documentation is complete
