Winterizing Fire Apparatus: A Cold-Weather Guide

The Bottom Line Winterize in October, not after the first hard freeze. The routine: verify coolant freeze point, service the air system and drain moisture daily, protect pump plumbing (drain what drains, heat what doesn’t), load-test batteries, swap to winter washer fluid and wiper blades, and set the salt-season wash discipline.

Two hours per truck in the fall prevents the cracked pump casings and dead batteries we see every December.

Every winter, the first week of sustained single digits brings the same calls into our shops: pumps that froze, air systems that iced, trucks that wouldn’t start for the 0300 call.

Almost all of it is preventable with a fall routine, the same logic behind the formal winterization checklists wildland agencies attach to their engine maintenance programs, like New Hampshire’s Division of Forests and Lands fire engine maintenance guide.

Here’s the routine we recommend, in the order to run it. Put a date on it: mid-October, every truck, documented (records).

Cooling system: test, don’t trust

Coolant protects at the freeze point it actually has, not the one on the jug. Test every unit with a refractometer (more accurate than float testers) and correct to the manufacturer’s specified protection level, for this region, plan for well below zero Fahrenheit. While you’re there: pressure-test the cap, inspect hoses for winter-brittleness cracking at the clamps, and confirm the radiator and charge-air cooler are free of debris. A marginal cooling system also shows up as heat problems during the annual pump test, same system, both seasons.

Block heaters: test them now. Plug in, verify draw, inspect cords. A dead block heater discovered in January is a hard-start season.

Why is air-system moisture the winter enemy?

Compressed air carries moisture; moisture in winter is ice in valves, and ice in valves is brakes that don’t release, or don’t apply. The fall service: replace or service the air dryer cartridge, then enforce daily tank draining through the season as a check-sheet item (it’s on the daily list). If a truck’s tanks are producing water daily despite a fresh dryer, that’s a service visit, not a habit to live with.

What’s your pump freeze plan?

This is the expensive one. A cracked pump casing or manifold is a four-to-five-figure repair and a truck out of service in fire season. Every pump operator should know the truck’s specific freeze protection plan:

  • Drain what drains. Low-point drains, gauge lines, auxiliary coolers, foam system components per manufacturer procedure. Gauge lines split first, they’re small, exposed, and forgotten.
  • Heat what doesn’t. Verify pump house heaters (and heated compartments on ambulances and rescues) actually produce heat before you need them. Circulator systems: test now.
  • Tank and plumbing discipline. Trucks parked outside or responding long distances in deep cold need pump circulation per your SOP; crews should know when to crack a discharge to keep water moving at a scene.
  • Foam systems have their own cold-weather procedures, check the manufacturer manual rather than assuming water rules apply.
  • Winter-rated washer fluid, and stock spare jugs on the truck
  • Winter wiper blades
  • Tire tread depth check: what passed in June may not be adequate for December response; chains or automatic chains inspected and crews drilled on deployment
  • Door and compartment seals inspected; lubricate locks and hinges with cold-rated lubricant so compartments open at the scene

Dry hydrants and rural water: if your district drafts, inspect and winterize your draft sites too, a perfect pump can’t pull from an ice-blocked strainer.

Why is winter a battery stress test?

Cold cuts battery capacity exactly when diesel starting demands more of it. The fall routine: load-test every battery bank (voltage alone lies), clean and protect terminals, verify charger/shore-line operation, and inspect the charging system. Replace marginal batteries in October at your convenience instead of in January by necessity. LED conversions on older trucks reduce parasitic load meaningfully, worth discussing at the parts counter.

Winterization protects against cold; the parallel program protects against what towns put on the roads. When should we winterize in New England? Mid-October target; done before the first hard freeze, full stop. Northern Maine and Vermont departments should run earlier. Reverse the seasonal items (washer fluid, wipers, chains) in April alongside the spring corrosion inspection.

Do trucks kept in heated stations need winterizing? Yes, the station is heated; the response isn’t. Coolant protection, air-system moisture, battery capacity, and pump freeze planning all apply the moment the truck leaves the bay for a multi-hour incident at 5°F.

What’s the most common winter failure you see? Split gauge lines and frozen drain valves on the pump side; weak batteries on the chassis side. Both are October fixes.
